AUGUST comes to a close ...

August has come to a close. We have played 1,226 games, or roughly 75% of the season. The remainder of the season will have the entire roster active. And we have some very good races.
We have three teams still with 600+ winning percentages (OTT, QUI and BAY). MLB has three as well, Chicago-N, Tampa Bay and Los Angeles-A.

The Babe Ruth Aaron continues to be a two-team race. Bloomington (BSK) leads the division by 3G. BSK relies on pitching and speed to get the job done. The SunKings are 10th in hitting (250) and 1st in pitching (3.92). They are the only BR team with a team ERA under 4. Arkansas (ARK) is second with a 62-61 record; the first time this year two BR-A teams are over 500! ARK is the opposite of BSK, all hitting, not much pitching. The Muleriders are 3rd in hitting (281) and 8th in pitching (5.03).

The Babe Ruth Williams is also a two-team race. Fairfax (FFF) has extended its lead to 4G. Fairfax, like BSK, relies on pitching. FFF is 8th in hitting (257) and 2nd in pitching (4.03). Rio Brazos (RBC) is second with a 68-53 record. RBC is above average in both categories; 4th in hitting (279) and 4th in pitching (4.29).

The Babe Ruth Mays is a two-team race as well. Quincy (QUI) leads the division by 4G and are hanging on with clutch hitting and clutch pitching. QUI is just 5th in hitting (275) and 6th in pitching (4.42) but hold the league's best record at 79-45. Bay State (BAY) is in second with 75 wins. BAY is leading the league in hitting (290) and 3rd in pitching (4.08). This will be a race for the ages!

Bay State (BAY) leads Rio Brazos (RBC) by 5.5 games for the Babe Ruth Wild Card.

In the Cy Young Koufax, Ottawa (OTT) has dropped is magic number to just 10 with 39 to play. At 93-30, the Beavers have virtually locked up home field throughout the playoffs. OTT is leading the DBA in hitting (317) and pitching (3.18). The only question is will its team BA exceed its ERA at season's end.

In the Cy Young Gibson, Lebanon (LEB) has extended its lead to 4G. LEB is 9th in hitting (248) and 4th in pitching (4.53). Carbondale (CDC) is in second with 55 wins. CDC is 3rd in hitting (286) and 7th in pitching (4.88). No team in the CY-G is above 500.

In the Cy Young Johnson, Jacksonville (JSC) has the second largest (OTT 31G) division lead in the DBA, 10G. JSC is doing it with a mix, 5th in hitting (277) and 3rd in pitching (4.52). BDD (BDD) is a surprising 500, after posting only the third 20-win month in the DBA, behind QUI's 22 wins in June, and OTT's 20 wins in August. This might be too-little, too-late for the Bombers, as they are just 7th in hitting (255) and 6th in pitching (4.76).

West Huron (WHW) holds a slim 1/2 game lead over BDD for the CY-WC. The Whitecaps are poised to strike; 2nd in hitting (287) and 2nd in pitching (4.34). Only the presence of Ottawa in their division is keeping this team from 90 wins.

Elk Hair Caddis 3, Apostles 2

Lincecum vs Sabathia

A pitching duel was expected, and a pitching duel was had. A total of 15 hits for both teams. Mauer started the scoring in the second, doubling home a run. Lopez singled in Mauer to make it 2 zip after two. In the 6th, the Caddis tied it on a double by Rowand and a single by Uggla. In the 8th, a laboring CC gave up a 2-out double to Uggla and the final score was 3-2. A lead-off PH single by Lewis to start the 9th looked promising for the Apostles, but the runner was wiped out on a Carlos Lee DP.

scoring the run. Saint Gabriel had a chance in the 9th but they came up
short.

Lincecum(6-6), allowing 2 runs for the game, picked up the victory. C.C.
Sabathia(10-8) ended up with the loss. He allowed 3 runs and 9 hits in 8
innings.

'Just one or two mistakes were all it took to beat us today' Jamie Imhoff
said. 'We take these games one day at a time, but this one was hard to
take.'

Apostles 9, Elk Hair Caddis 7

Hanley led off the scoring with a 2-R HR in the top of the first, 2-0 Saint Gabriel. Rio tied it up after a 2bX single scored two. Roberts doubled home two more to make it 4-2 Caddis. In the third, a pair of doubles plate a run for ILL. After a Zaun run-scoring single in the bottom, Roberts connected with his second double, making it 6-3 Rio after three. Bonser, Saint Gabriel's starter, had already thrown 81 pitches after 3!

In the fifth, Eckstein stretched a triple then scored on Hanley's single, 6-4 Rio. The Elk Hair Caddis answered in the bottom, lofting a lazy fly to Carlos Lee in left, which he misplayed into a run-scoring single. In the 6th, down 7-4, Lee doubled and Lopez singled to chase RBC's starter. Enter Darren Oliver to face Ichiro. One RFX double later, the score was tied!

The Big Unit threw only 37 pitches in his three innings of work.

In the 7th, Miguel Cabrera blasted a straight HR to make it 8-7 Apostles. Ichiro finished the scoring off with a single thru the drawn in Caddis infield, 9-7. Kevin Gregg pitched two scoreless for the save.

In a tight game it was the Saint Gabriel Apostles 9, the Rio Brazos Elk Hair
Caddis 7 at Ranch at Rio Brazos.

Hanley Ramirez enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He cleared the fences for
a two-run home run (his 11th of the season) in the 1st inning, doubled in the
3rd inning and laced a base-hit scoring a run in the 5th inning.
Offensively, Saint Gabriel was a juggernaut. They scored in 6 separate
innings.

Randy Johnson(3-0) was the winner allowing 1 run in 3 innings. Johnson was
helped out by Kevin Gregg who recorded his 14th save. Darren Oliver(2-1)
suffered the loss in relief. He surrendered 4 hits and no walks in 1 and 1/3
innings.

Saint Gabriel now has a record of 49-60. With the loss, the Rio Brazos
ballclub's record is 63-49.

Apostles 9, Elk Hair Caddis 3

A great way to start the final series of the month. Nyjer Morgan smashed a 1-12 HR in the top of the second to put the Apostles on top, 3-0. The Caddis would tie it in the bottom of the frame on a pair of singles and a wild pitch. However, aggressive baserunning by Saint Gabriel lead to two runs in the 4th, making it 5-3. The Apostles would tack on 4 more runs, three on Carlos Lee's 20th HR of the year.

Apostles beat the Rio Brazos Elk Hair Caddis by a score of 9 to 3.

The Rio Brazos fans didn't appreciate the big day Lee had. He slapped a

one-base hit in the 7th inning and lost the ball over the fence for three
runs (his 20th of the season) in the 8th inning. Saint Gabriel finished with
15 hits while Rio Brazos ended up with 10.

The victory went to Carlos Silva(9-13) who went 5 innings, allowing 3 runs.

Fighting Falcon 10, Apostles 9 (13)

It was a great rubber game to a great series! Fairfax battled back all game, finally pulling out the victory in the 13th. All three "new" Apostle relievers gave up a home run to give the lead back to the Fighting Falcon.

Fuentes gave up a HR to Beltre in the 5th. Neshek gave up a HR to Duncan in the 7th and Wheeler gave up a HR to Patterson in the 13th to end it.

There were great defensive plays throughout the game, including a 1-19 blocked plate by Molina. Also, back-to-back doubles were robbed by Faixfax defenders in extra innings by guarding the lines!

Fairfax takes the series 2-1.

The score was knotted at 9 after nine innings. Fairfax came out the victor in
the 13th inning. After an out was recorded, Corey Patterson hit a
bases-empty home run (his 6th of the season) giving Fairfax the win much to
the delight of the home town crowd. This was a game of many highs and lows
for the home town fans, as the lead kept changing - 7 times in all.

Brad Hennessey(2-3) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and allowing
no runs. Dan Wheeler(1-1) was given the loss in relief.

Fairfax jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one inning and never looked back. Cole Hamels went the distance for the Fighting Falcon. Cole's shut out was preserved in the 8th, when Joe Mauer was gunned out at the plate trying to score on a double.

Cole Hamels allowed 3 hits while blanking Saint Gabriel and first baseman
Garrett Atkins went yard and had 3 RBI as the Fairfax Fighting Falcon
outscored the Saint Gabriel Apostles 8 to 0.

Hamels(13-8) escaped virtually unscathed against the Saint Gabriel hitters.
He allowed just 3 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 4.84
to 4.57. Fairfax had a total of 12 hits for the game.

Carlos Zambrano(7-6) took the loss. He allowed 8 hits and 3 walks in 4
innings. 'He was moving it around and spotting it very well.' Jamie Imhoff
said. Hamels pitched a great game. He deserves all the credit.'

Probable 4+ Year Resignable Rookies ...

We have 109 rookies that can be resigned at the end of the season. With that in mind, I see a possibility that eight *might* get huge 4+ year deals.

SJS is light on cash, but has CA Chris Iannetta. Look for SJS to go with a three-catcher roster next year, and resign their sensation to a 4/16 deal.

WHW has 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff. The 27 yr old is probably the least likely rookie on this list, but he could see a 4/16 deal. West Huron's 3B position is up for grabs between KK, Figgins and Guillen.

EAT has the cash to spend and has three potential studs on their pitching staff to choose from. Brandon Morrow is turning into the Easies' closer-of-the-future and might get closer money to resign. Kevin Slowey is a 24 yr old #1 starter and could see the only 5/25 deal. Andrew Miller has the reputation, but not the numbers. He's just 23 and should be locked up for 4 more years.

LAS has Ublado Jimenez to make a solid rotation even younger. LAS has tons of cash and Ubaldo should get 16M of it!

RBC has SP John Danks. While low on cash, a 4/16 to Danks should be justified. Danks, Lincecum and Halladay will make RBC's top 3 SP one of the best in the DBA.

RID has SP Mike Pelfrey. Giving Pelfrey a four-year deal completes the RID rotation. Pelfrey and Lester will make a solid 1-2.

I don't see any other rookies that stand out as "must have 4/16". We are changing the rookie system starting next year, so this will be the last year of 4M per year deals. The new system is explained on the forum.

26 and Under RFA's for the Auction ...

With August half-gone, lets take a look at a few of the younger RFA's this off-season. These are the ones that will have the majority of the trade and "Franchise" talk.

BSK has Huston Street. Street has 53 IP and a 1.36 WHIP so far. He also has the "young closer" tag.
CDC has Brad Thompson. Thompson has 50 IP and a 1.34 WHIP so far. A starter/reliever.
FFF has Yadier Molina. Molina has 409 PA and 729 OPS from the catching spot. He's having a break-out offensive season to go with his legendary defense.
ILL has Miguel Cabrera and Jose Lopez. Cabrera has 522 PA and 878 OPS while Lopez has 516 PA and 751 OPS. Both a anchoring an ILL infield that is steadily improving.
JSC has JP Howell. Howell has 68 IP and 1.19 WHIP. One of the better relievers so far.
OTT has Dioneer Navarro, Robinson Cano and Jorge Cantu. Navarro has 354 PA and 754 OPS, Cano has 481 PA and 698 OPS and Cantu has 520 PA and 797 OPS. Navarro is Molina-lite and Cano/Cantu are solid infield producers.
QUI has Jose Reyes. Reyes is having a monster season at SS, 577 PA, 851 OPS. Look at Reyes to be "top dog" at the Auction.

Apostles 3, Fighting Falcon 0

Welcome to Falcon-Forbes Field, where singles come to die!

That was the slogan outside Fairfax's home field and it proved true in Game One of the series. A total of eight hits in the game, three by Fairfax.

Eckstein led off the scoring by nipping the foul pole for a solo shot in the first. In the third, back-to-back singles, a SACF and an error by Beltre completed all of the scoring on the day, 3-0 Apostles. Fairfax put up their only "rally" in the 5th, smacking back to back singles, loading the bases on Patterson HBP. A potential SACF dropped into Nyjer Morgan's hands and he gunned out Gomes at the plate to preserve the shut out for CC Sabathia and the Apostles. The other other Falcon hit game in the first on a Sanchez double to right-center.

C.C. Sabathia pitched a 3 hit shutout as the Saint Gabriel Apostles defeated
the Fairfax Fighting Falcon 3 to 0 at Falcon-Forbes Field.

Sabathia(9-7) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the Fairfax offense. He
didn't allow much, just 3 hits and no walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop
from 4.35 to 4.12. Neither team managed to score after the 3rd inning.

Derek Lowe(10-7) suffered the loss. He allowed just 3 runs and 5 hits in 9
innings. Chris Valle was obviously impressed with the pitching of Sabathia,
'That guy made us look a little silly out there tonight. We just couldn't
get to him at all - everything was working for him. I just hope that he got
that kinda performance out of his system.'

JULY comes to a close ...

Fairfax (FFF) has seen its lead in the BR-W shrink to 2G. FFF (60 wins) is 8th in hitting (261) and 4th in pitching (4.02). RBC (58) is surging in second. BBM (44) rounds out the division.

Quincy (QUI) continues to lead the tightening BR-M with 65 wins. QUI is 2nd in hitting (282) and 7th in pitching (4.39). BAY (62) is hanging on in second place. SJS (53) rounds out the divison.

Ottawa (OTT) holds a commanding 24G lead in the CY-K. OTT (73) is first in hitting (313) and pitching (3.11). OTT is on a 119 win pace. WHW (49), ELR (42) and RID (40) round out the division.
