Sunkings 5, Apostles 0

In the night game, D-Train returns the favor, tossing a 4-hit ShO of his own for the hometown Sunkings.

Griffey started the scoring for the Sunkings in the first inning, smashing a no-doubt 3R HR. Saint Gabriel would threaten in the 5th, but with two on, one out, Ichiro and Eck miss SI splits to end it. Nick Swisher would blast a solo shot in the 6th to make it 4-0 and the Sunkings would tack on one more in the 8th. The Apostles would threaten Willis' shutout bid in the 9th. It went single, DP, single, fly out to make the final score 5-0.

Dontrelle Willis whitewashed Saint Gabriel as the Bloomington Sunkings topped
the Saint Gabriel Apostles by a score of 5 to 0 at Quinten's
Yard.

Willis(4-3) was tremendous on the mound for Bloomington. He allowed only 4
hits and 3 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 4.14 to 3.68.
Bloomington had 10 hits for the afternoon.

Bronson Arroyo(3-6) was the loser. He surrendered 4 runs and 8 hits in 6 and
2/3 innings.

Apostles 4, Sunkings 0

In the first game of a day-night doubleheader, Carlos Zambrano shuts out the Bloomington squad, 4-0.

Sunking pitchers had trouble with the strike zone all game, walking 5 and hitting 3. Unfortunately for the home team, four of those walks came in the 4th, when Saint Gabriel scored all four of its runs.

Quentin's Yard was taking away singles and homers all day, as no fewer than six BP SI and two BP HR were hit in the game.

Carlos Zambrano mowed down 10 Bloomington batters as the Saint Gabriel
Apostles defeated the Bloomington Sunkings 4 to 0 at Quinten's
Yard.

Zambrano(4-3) simply dominated Bloomington. He allowed just 4 hits and 4
walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 4.76 to 4.31. The pitchers took
over after the 4th inning as neither team was able to score again.

The losing pitcher was Chad Gaudin(4-5). He allowed Saint Gabriel 4 runs in 3
and 2/3 innings of work. Zambrano was humble when questioned about his
performance, 'Well, I felt pretty confident in my pitches tonight. But, I
had great support behind me and I just threw what was called. That was an
extremely well called game!'

CC Sabathia tosses a 120-pitch, CG, ShO against Bloomington.

Mike Jacobs, making a rare start at 3B, doubled in two runs in the top of the first to make it 2-0. That would be all that CC would need as he goes the distance. In the 6th, Thome blasted a 2R HR to finish up the scoring, 4-0.

Bloomington's best scoring opportunity came in the 8th, when I-Rod doubled to lead off the frame. But the next three Sunkings were put down in order.

Over the Weekend in the DBA ...

RID goes 5-4, including series wins at BBM and BAY.
RBC goes 6-6, including series wins at CDC and BDD.
BBM goes 1-5.
QUI sweeps a series at RID.
BSK hands OTT first series loss.

9 series reported in total. Less than two weeks left in the month.

Presidents 4, Apostles 1

Quincy brought out the brooms, sweeping the fading Apostles 4-1. Ichiro lead off the game with a stretch triple and Quentin followed with a ground ball and Saint Gabriel had a 1-0 lead. In the bottom, McClouth singled in a run, tying it at 1.

There would be no more scoring until the 5th. Reyes singled and stole second. Silva intentionally walks Big Papi, then unintentionally walks Burrell to load'm up. Unlike the third inning, when Thames grounded into a inning-ending DP, Marcus just K'd. With two out, Josh "willinghammered" a clutch single, scoring two. Nate followed with a double, plating the 4th and final run of the game.

Papelbon come in with 1-out, none on, in the 9th inning to get the cheese save, but was denied by the SOM gods! :-) No save for you!

Presidents 10, Apostles 5

Punishing. My one word to describe the Quincy offense. I'm not sure how Arroyo lasted 6 innings WITHOUT being tired, but he did.

Werth led off the bottom of the first with a stand-up triple. After a Reyes SACF, 1-0 Quincy. In the second, Burrell doubles (misses 1-10 HR) and Blake doubles him home, 2-0.

In the top of the 4th, last minute 2B Wilson Betemit lucks into a 3R HR (1-5) to make it 3-2 Saint Gabriel. But, Quincy storms back with three in the bottom, 5-3. Cabrera mashes a 2R BP HR in the top of the 5th to knot the game at 5, but Pat "the Bat" counters with a 2R BP HR of his own in the bottom of the frame to make it 7-5 Presidents.

The 'Dents would tack on three more insurance runs in the latter frames, mostly because of the porous Apostle defense, to make the final 10-5.

For the game, Big Papi goes 0-4 and the Presidents still put up a 10-spot! All other batters collected at least one hit and they scored in 7 of 8 innings. Punishing.

Designated hitter Pat Burrell hit one over the fence and had 2 RBI as the
Quincy Presidents outscored the Saint Gabriel Apostles 10 to 5.

Burrell enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He doubled in the 2nd inning,
doubled in the 4th inning and cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his
11th of the season) in the 5th inning. The Quincy offense poured it on,
scoring in 7 of the 9 innings.

The victory was credited to Jose Valverde(2-2) who went 2 and 1/3 innings,
allowing no runs. Dustin Moseley recorded the save, his 2nd. Bronson
Arroyo(2-5) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 9 runs in 6 innings of work.

JUNE Reaches Halfway Point ...

We have two weeks left in the month of June and 186 games (62 series) are outstanding. 18 have been reported so far.

BSK still leads ARK by 6G in the BR-A. EAT has slipped below the 300 mark with a 17-40 record.

FFF leads RBC by 6.5G in the BR-W. All three teams are still over 500. RBC and BBM are #2 and #3 in the wild card standings.

BAY now leads QUI by 1G in the BR-M. QUI leads the wild card with a 36-22 record. SJS is in the hunt at 26-28.

OTT holds the largest lead in the DBA, 20G, over ELR in the CY-K. OTT has 10 wins in June already. ELR is just 2.5G out of the wild card.

CDC holds a 3.5G lead over LEB in the CY-G. LEB has gone 7-8 in June and continues to lead the wild card. ILL continues to fall into "lottery" territory.

JSC (aka LVS) leads BDD by 8G in the CY-J. LAS continues to lead the lottery at 11-40.

An interesting note, JSC (15-3) and LEB (14-4) lead the league in one-run wins. Neither of those percentages should be sustainable for the rest of the season. Does this mean CDC's lead is safe and JSC's isn't? Only time will tell.

Presidents 6, Apostles 3

Zambrano didn't have it. It was going to be THAT kind of game. After two, Quincy led 2-0, but it should have been much worse. Carlos had already allowed 7 baserunners thru 2, and the offense was being shut down by Hudson.

In the third, Cabrera singles in a run to make it a one run game. Blake follows in the bottom with a 1-13 HR to make it 4-1 Quincy. The "Willinghammer" came out in force in the 5th and 7th, blasting two solo shots to make the game 6-2.

Entering the 9th, the Apostles manager was looking to "save PAs" for his middle infielders. Dogs and cats were living together, pitchers were hitting ... it was madness. The next thing I know is there are two-on, two-out and the Apostles are bringing the tying run to the plate. In strolls Jon Papelbon to shut the door. In a fit of insanity, Joe Mauer was called back from the batters box and Carlos "HR ties it" Lee is called on, the last Apostle bat. The roll ... BP HR 1-19 to tie it ...

We roll 20. Game over, have a nice day. What an exciting way to start the three game set.

Josh Willingham blasted 2 homeruns and scored 3 times as the Quincy Presidents
defeated the Saint Gabriel Apostles 6 to 3 at Adams Field.

Willingham helped send the fans home happy. He slapped a single in the 3rd
inning, hit a bases-empty home run in the 5th inning and blasted a solo shot
(his 15th of the season) in the 7th inning. Saint Gabriel threatened in the
9th but their rally came up short.

Tim Hudson(6-3) allowed 3 runs in 8 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Jonathan Papelbon earned the save, his 12th. Carlos Zambrano(3-3)
absorbed the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 7 innings of work.

Apostles 10, Sharks 5

In the rubber game of the series, the Apostles erupted for 9 runs in the 8th inning for a come-from-behind 10-5 win.

Hanley Ramirez starting the Shark's scoring with a lead-off HR in the bottom of the first. The San Juan squad would tack on two more thru six, on a Harris 2-out double in the 4th and a comebacker by Crisp in the 5th.

A Brendan Harris error would lead to the Apostles lone run in the 7th, making the score 3-1 Sharks. San Juan reliever Pat Neshek was cruising along until Carlos Lee's PH double in the 8th. Then the flood gates opened up. After four pitching changes and seven more hits, including a second hit for PH Carlos Lee, Saint Gabriel was ahead for good, 10-3.

In the bottom of the frame, it looked like the Sharks wouldn't play dead as Sheffield led off with an opposite field blast. Two singles later and San Juan had two on and no out. But, Mark Ellis missed his BP HR split and Torrealba grounded into a DP to end the comeback bid.

The Saint Gabriel Apostles offense put up 9 runs on the scoreboard in the 8th
inning and easily topped the San Juan Sharks; the final score was 10 to
5.

C.C. Sabathia(4-5) pitched well enough to earn the win. He surrendered 10
hits and 3 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings and allowed 2 gopher balls. Saint
Gabriel had 13 hits for the night while San Juan had 10.

Pat Neshek(0-1) was given the loss in relief. The Saint Gabriel ballclub's
record now stands at 25-35. Chris Mordas was unhappy with his club's recent
performance. 'We can't keep losing games' he said. 'It gets to be
embarrassing after a while.'

The 10 Million Dollar Men ...

Back in February of this year, 11 players received contracts in excess of 10M per year. After a third of the MLB season, lets see how they are fairing ...

#1) Jake Peavy, 5/80, 16M per ... on the 15-day DL right now ... pitching well, 1.16 WHIP, 2.91 ERA
#2) Alex Rodriguez, 3/44, 14.6M per ... hitting well, but below A-Rod standards, 293/358/540
#3) Erik Bedard, 3/40, 13.3M per ... spent time on the DL ... pitching average, 1.33 WHIP, 4.47 ERA
#4) Tim Hudson, 3/39, 13M per ... pitching well, 1.14 WHIP, 3.01 ERA
#5) Roy Oswalt, 4/51, 12.75M per ... pitching below average, 1.46 WHIP, 5.38 ERA

#6) Magglio Ordonez, 4/51, 12.75M per ... hitting well, 318/390/509
#7) Johan Santana, 4/46, 11.5M per ... pitching well, but below Santana standards, 1.20 WHIP, 3.30 ERA
#8) Carlos Pena, 3/31, 10.3M per ... currently on 15-day DL ... hitting poorly, 227/322/430
#9) John Smoltz, 3/31, 10.4M per ... out for season, missed time on DL ... pitched well in limited action, 1.18 WHIP, 2.57 ERA
#10) Ichiro Suzuki, 5/51, 10.2M per ... hitting well below Ichiro standards, 289/344/386
#11) Barry Zito, 4/40, 10M per ... pitching awfully, 1.84 WHIP, 5.87 ERA

There is alot of money tied up in these eleven players. I don't think we will see another 11 10M players in 09, but we might. The CAP is increasing to 120M, so teams will have the room to spend. However, the pool isn't as deep.

Overall, only two players are putting up "expected" numbers, Hudson and Ordonez. The other nine are underperforming. But, they do have two-thirds of the season to pick up the pace. And, since these guys are stars for a reason, I think most of them will.

Sharks 13, Apostles 9

The second game of the series started out innocently enough, Dukes robs Coco Crisp of a 1-2 HR in the bottom of the first. After that, the scoring didn't stop.

After 3, it was 3-1 Sharks. In the top of the 4th, Eck singles to tie it at 3, Suzuki single makes it 4-3 and a wild pitch makes it 5-3. In the bottom, Shealy hits straight HR (weak) off of Bacsik. Then Quentin bobbles a RF-X to make it 5-4. Back to back singles followed by a 2B-X hit and its 7-5 Sharks. The scoring didn't stop there! Quentin hits his second HR of the game and Carlos Lee hits a PH HR to make it 8-7 Apostles after 4 1/2. A Lopez error in the bottom half knots it at 8 again.

In the top of the 8th, a rare CF-X 2B (Crisp) puts Lee at second with no out. After a SAC, Willits misplays a RF-X into a double making it 9-8 Apostles. But, in the bottom of the 8th, the Sharks score 5, capped by Brendan Harris' GS off of the Apostles closer to make the final 13-9.

At Deep Blue the San Juan Sharks registered 5 runs in the 8th inning and
easily handled the Saint Gabriel Apostles by the score of 13 to 9.

The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Brendan Harris. He banged out a single in the 4th inning and
brought the hometown folks to their feet with a Grand Slammer (his 3rd of the
season) in the 8th inning. This was a game of many highs and lows for the
home town fans, as the lead kept changing - 7 times in all.

The win was credited to Brian Fuentes(4-2) who went 1 and 2/3 innings allowing
no runs. Kevin Gregg(3-5) was tagged with the loss in relief. He gave up 5
runs and 4 hits in 1 inning.

Sharks 3, Apostles 1

An interesting Game One, to say the least. There were baserunning miscues everywhere; Ichiro never got a lead and was thrown out advancing to third. Sheffield misses 1-18 HR split but Jacobs makes his BP HR (1-3)! Hits galore, but all scattered.

Hill(4-6) finally bested his Saint Gabriel opposite, Carlos Silva(6-6), by
the score of 3 to 1.

San Juan came up with 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning. Saint Gabriel
had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Hill got help from Brian Fuentes who was credited with his 2nd save. Silva
was hit with the loss. Chris Mordas was just happy to get a win, 'We've had
such a bad streak of games -- boy, it's great to get the monkey off our back.
Now maybe we can relax a little and play the kind of baseball of which we
are capable.'

Left fielder Elijah Dukes left the yard and had 2 RBI at Ganzee Stadium where
the Saint Gabriel Apostles beat the Burmese Blood Monkeys in 10 innings 6 to
5.

The score was knotted at 4 after nine innings. Saint Gabriel won it in the
10th inning. David Eckstein led off and started the attack as he banged out
a single, and an error was also committed. Two outs later Mike Jacobs
stepped in and he was walked intentionally. Dukes then delivered a single
scoring a run. Joe Mauer was up next and he slapped a base-hit scoring the
final run of the inning. Burmese had 15 hits in the game while Saint Gabriel
had 12, but Saint Gabriel had the more timely hits.

Kevin Gregg(3-3) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 1 and 1/3 innings.
Chris Capuano(0-3) was the losing pitcher in relief. The win by Saint
Gabriel was very good news as they had been 2-8 of late. Now their seasonal
record improves to 24-30. With this loss, Burmese has a 4-6 record of late,
27-27, worst in the division overall.

Blood Monkeys 4, Apostles 3

Ryan Ludwick would miss a 1-12 HR in the second, only to redeem himself by blasting a BP HR in the 8th off of Zambrano to tie it at 3. Alex Rios missed a BP HR in the 3rd. However, he provided the game winning single with two out in the 9th. Good game.

Woody Williams of FFF Tosses the 11th No-Hitter in DBA History!

It was a lazy Tuesday afternoon. The season was in its first week. Some of the Rio Brazos crowd of 17,000 decided to take the day off of work to see the hometown Caddis begin their march into the post-season. They saw something different. They saw history.

Livan Hernandez was pitching for RBC. Woody Williams was on the hill for the visiting Falcons.

After five and a half innings, Fairfax was ahead 7-0. The game was pretty much over, except for the magic the FFF hurler was weaving. Through five, no hits. He had struck out five, and only one ball was hit hard; right at 3B Beltre. He had walked three, but two were erased on ground balls.

As Gregg Zaun swung at the 84th pitch from Williams, the crowd collectively drew in their breath. Zaun hit a screamer towards SS Jose Reyes. Jose leaped ... and caught it. Adrian Gonzalez then laced a sure single towards right fielder Luke Scott. Scott dove and somehow kept the no-no alive. Hopper grounded out weakly to end the inning.

It was three up, three down in the 7th. Woody was at 102 pitches by the end of the inning, but there was no way this veteran was getting pulled.

Mike Lowell started the 8th by swinging at a first pitch curveball, grounding weakly to third. Uggla and Giles followed by grounding out to Reyes at short, but neither was particularly difficult plays. After 8, 110 pitches, no hits.

To the 9th we go and Zaun leads off. This time, Williams gets the best of him, striking him out looking on three pitches. Gonzalez pops up for out number two. And Norris Hopper grounds out to Reyes to complete the no-hitter!

Woody Williams' line: 9 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6K, 123 pitches, 28 batters faced.

In strat terms, the game was an anomoly of sorts. First off, only 11 of 28 rolls were on the pitchers card. 6 of the 11 were X-chances, but three of those had no hit possibility. Only two rolls the entire game had more than a 10% chance of a hit: SI 1-6 and RF-X (Scott was a 3).

Congratulations to Woody Williams and the Fairfax Fighting Falcons!

Brandon Phillips of BDD Ties DBA Single-Game Strikeout Record!

On April 5th, 2008, Brandon Phillips of BDD became the 25th player in DBA history to strike out 5 times in a game. Phillips completed the feat at Lebanon, in 6 at-bats.

With Nate Robertston on the mound in the first, the first three Bombers went down via the strikeout, including Phillips on 3 pitches (roll 1-8). The Lugnut starter struck out two in the 3rd, including Phillips again on 4 pitches (roll 1-9). In the 5th, Phillips struck out for the third time, seeing just 3 pitches (roll 6-6). In the 8th, facing Joe Nathan, Phillips looked at 5 pitches (roll 6-6) before K'ing the fourth time. And in the 10th inning, Phillips struck out for the 5th and final time, 3 pitches (roll 1-9 again) against Joe Beimel.

The Bombers went on to lose the game in 12 innings by a score of 3-2.

MAY comes to a close ...

The month of May has come to an end. All of the results are in. Teams have played about 32% of the season, 51 games.

BSK leads the BR-A at 26-25. The rest of the division is fading fast, with ARK being the nearest competitor at 20-31. If BSK stays at or above 500, it should have it wrapped up before the September stretch gets here.

FFF has an even more impressive 7G lead in the BR-W. FFF is one of four teams (BAY, JSC and OTT) on a 100+ win pace. Fairfax is doing it with pitching, allowing a DBA-low 3.76 runs per game. RBC is second at 28-23, and knocking on the Wild Card door, just 2G out.

The tug-of-war continues in the BR-M. Now, BAY has a slim 2G lead over QUI. BAY has the leagues top offense, plating 5.75 runs a game. QUI isn't far behind at 5.65. A-Rod and Big Papi continue their personal battle for the BR-MVP as well.

QUI (30-21) leads RBC and BBM in the BR Wild Card race.

In the CY-K, OTT expands its lead over ELR to 15G. OTT, the DBA's only 40G winner at this point, leads the DBA in runs at 6.80, and is second to FFF in pitching, averaging only 3.80 runs given up.

CDC leads the CY-G at 30-21. CDC is second in the league in offense with 5.71 runs per game. LEB is just 3G back at 27-24.

JSC leads the CY-J by 8G over BDD. JSC is 32-19 while BDD is fading at 24-27. Jacksonville (Lehigh) is averaging 5.61 runs.

LEB now leads the CY Wild Card by 2G over a surging ELR squad. BDD and ILL had May collapses to see them fall under 500 for the first time. WHW is creeping into the hunt at 24-27. A solid month by any of those six teams will put them in the driver's seat going into the second half of the season.
