Aces 9, Apostles 1

John Lackey is GOOD! Real good!

The lone Apostle run scores on a questionable "wild pitch" with two down in the 5th. Aces bats hammered Sabathia all day, and didn't let up on the single Apostle reliever, Green.

It was ugly and it was over fast. Not the way I wanted to end the month.

John Lackey delivered 9 solid innings at The Fair Grounds as the Altenberg
Aces beat the Saint Gabriel Apostles 9 to 1.

Altenberg claimed the early lead in the first inning when they scored 2 runs
on 2 hits. That early scoring held up. Altenberg had a total of 13 hits for
the game.

The win went to Lackey(5-12) who allowed 1 run in the game. C.C. Sabathia(7-7)
suffered the loss. He gave up 8 runs in 7 innings of work.

Aces 14, Apostles 3

This one was over before it started. Apostle starter Carlos Silva couldn't last two innings and the Apostle bats couldn't figure out Kyle Lohse. Altenberg cruises to a 14-3 win.

The damage came in the bottom of the first. After Saint Gabriel scraped up one run on a 1-4 single, LFX single and clear single, Altenberg exploded for five runs, 4 coming from Jason Kubel's BP GS! The Aces added another three in the 2nd, chasing Silva.

Jason Bay provided the second Ace GS in the 6th, but the game was already out of reach.

destroyed the Saint Gabriel Apostles by a score of 14 to 3 at The Fair
Grounds.

Bay made sure the Altenberg fans enjoyed themselves. He laced a one-base hit
which scored a run in the 2nd inning and launched a rocket-shot out of the
park for a Grand Slam homerun (his 14th of the season) in the 6th inning.
Altenberg had 16 hits for the night while Saint Gabriel had 8.

Kyle Lohse(6-6) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 innings and allowing 1
run. Carlos Silva(6-11) was hit with the loss. He allowed 8 runs and 8 hits
in 1 and 1/3 innings.

Apostles 1, Aces 0

Great pitchers duel between Bronson Arroyo and Tim Wakefield! It was a nightmare for baserunners as three runners were caught stealing, one picked off, and crucial one held at third.

All of the scoring happened in the sixth. Ichiro lucked a 1-9 single, but was quickly picked off of first. Then, Hart misplayed an easy out in RF into a double for Eckstein. Two wild pitches later and the Apostles were up 1 zip.

Altenberg managed to get the lead-off hitter on in 5 of the 9 innings, including a lead-off double by Gonzalez to start the 9th. Adrian just missed a 1-14 HR to tie it up, settling for the double. After a pair of shallow fly outs, Tejada laced a possible game-tying single up the middle. Not wanting to challenge Ichiro's arm, the third base coach held up Gonzo at third! At 119 pitches, but showing now real fatigue, Arroyo was left in to face one more hitter. He struck out Loretta, his 8th on the day, to finish the ShO.

Bronson Arroyo pitched a complete game shutout at The Fair Grounds where the
Saint Gabriel Apostles beat the Altenberg Aces by the score of 1 to
0.

Arroyo(6-7) was very good in the win. He allowed just 6 hits and 2 walks in 9
innings. Altenberg threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

Tim Wakefield(7-11) took the loss. He pitched 9 innings giving up only 6 hits
and no walks. When questioned about the loss, Keith Mangels said, 'The fans
got to see an exciting game out there this afternoon. Unfortunately, we
couldn't get it done this time. Next time, though, we'll be the clubhouse
with all the smiles.'

Apostles 6, Easies 4

In the rubber game of the series, Saint Gabriel built a 6-1 lead and held on to win it, 6-4.

In the 1st, Melky Cabrera robbed Thome of a 2R BP HR. Unfazed, the Apostles scored once in each of the next two frames for a 2-0 lead. Eaton clawed out one of their own on a single, walk and BP SI by Laird to make it a one run game. However, the Apostles erupted for 4 in the 4th to make it 6-1.

Eaton had a single-fest in the 5th (two BP SI, one 1BX single and a SI split) to make it 6-4, but that's as close as they would get. Big Z went the distance, allowing 7 hits, all singles.

Carlos Zambrano allowed Jamie Imhoff to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete
game as the Saint Gabriel Apostles defeated the hapless Eaton Easies by a
score of 6 to 4 at Mi-High Stadium.

Eaton never recovered after Saint Gabriel took the lead in the 2nd inning
scoring one runner on 2 hits. Saint Gabriel had a total of 12 hits for the
game.

The win went to Zambrano(6-4) who allowed 4 runs in the game. Scott Baker(3-8)
was the losing pitcher. He allowed 12 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings.

Easies 7, Apostles 5 (10)

Another wild one at Eaton! This time the Easies pulled out the victory.

It was a back-n-forth tussle all game. Saint Gabriel plated two runs in the top of the first on a single, single, BP single, walk and FC. Eaton responded with back-to-back-to-back doubles to tie it up. In the third, Lee singled home Thome (who doubled) to make it 3-2 Apostles only to see back-to-back doubles by Tulo and Glaus make it 4-3 Easies. In the 6th, Quentin singled and Ichiro slashed a 1-8 triple to tie it up once again. An Eckstein SACF made it 5-4 Saint Gabriel. But in the bottom of the 7th, Tulo singled in Lopez to knot it at 5. It looked like Eaton would break it open after a SSX single by Glaus, but Ankiel missed a 1-9 SI to keep the inning going.

Both teams threatened in the 8th. With two down, Buchholz hit Eckstein and Cantu. Capps was called from the pen to face Thome, who missed a BP HR to end the top of the frame. In the bottom, Wily Mo lead off with a single, but was stranded as the next three Easies went down in order.

Excitement rose for the visitors as Nyjer Morgan lead off the inning with a triple! After some maneuvering left the Apostle bench depleted, CJ Wilson slammed the door with no damage done. In the bottom of the 9th, Nyjer kept the one-man highlight show going by robbing Cabrera of a GW BP HR! However, the Apostle pen was running on fumes and Pedro Feliz crushed a hanger from Gregg in the 10th to win it, 7-5.

The score was knotted at 5 after nine innings. Eaton won it in the 10th
inning. After an out was recorded, Wily Mo Pena started the rally when he
laced a one-base hit. After another out, Pedro Feliz stepped up to the plate
and he cracked a two-run shot (his 8th of the season) giving Eaton the win
and sending the home town fans into a frenzy. This was the kind of game that
many fans love as the lead changed hands 5 times.

The win went to C.J. Wilson(5-4) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. Kevin
Gregg(4-7) absorbed the loss in relief. When questioned, Fran Telarico
remarked, 'It's been a while since a win felt this good - heck, it's been a
while since we had a win period!'

Apostles 6, Easies 5

The Apostles pull off a miracle at Eaton! Ichiro Suzuki and Joe Mauer pulled off the perfect double steal in the top of the 9th to bring the visitors all the way back from 5 down.

Eaton lead off the scoring in the fourth, on a Cabrera walk, Tulowitski double, Teahen walk, Payton BP SI and Feliz 1-11 single. That made it 2-0 Easies. It could have been worse, but Teahen was out at home on a close play.

In the 5th, Cabrera singled, Tulo smacked his second double of the game, and Teahen belted a 1-14 HR to make it 5 zip Eaton. The Apostles would rally in the sixth with two singles, a walk and a pair of doubles to score 4 times.

Both teams would threaten in the 7th. Back-to-back singles by Ichiro and Eckstein put two-on with no out for the Apostles, only to see Eck erased on a Cantu DP. In the bottom, Cabrera and Tulo singled, only to be wiped by a Teahen DP. Payton missed a 1-9 single to end the frame.

The wheels were turning in the 9th. Down one, Betemit laced a PH SI to start the inning. Nyjer Morgan pinch ran, but was countered by Matt Capps, who held him at first. Fred Lewis rapped a PH SI to put runners at first and second. Morgan thought about third, but was held up (1-13). That brought the top of the order in Ichiro, who ripped a clean single into left, loading the bases. Eckstein lifted a fly ball and Morgan beat the throw home, knotting the game at 5. Mauer was announced as the PH, and was countered by reverse-righty, David Riske. Riske didn't disappoint, inducing a gbB that nailed Lewis at home, putting runners on the corners with two down. With Thome up, and a little over 30% for him to succeed, we looked at the double steal. Ichiro 1-8.

The call was made. Double Steal. Mauer 1-5 at second, go! Laird throws. Ichiro breaks; throw cut back to home. Split card .... 8! 6-5 Apostles!

Gregg put the Easies down in order to close out the victory. This ranks up there as one of the awesomest wins I've had. Great start to the series!

David Eckstein had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at Mi-High Stadium as the Saint
Gabriel Apostles won in dramatic fashion coming back to beat the ice-cold
Eaton Easies by the count of 6 to 5.

Saint Gabriel won the game with a rally in the 9th inning scoring 2 runs
utilizing 2 base hits. Wilson Betemit opened up the inning nicely when he
drew a walk. Fred Lewis was next and he laced a single. Ichiro Suzuki then
laced a base-knock to load the bases. Eckstein came up and he hit a deep fly
which plated a run. After another out, Suzuki stepped up to the plate and he
suprised everyone by stealing home scoring the final run of the inning.
Saint Gabriel had 11 hits for the night.

The win was credited to Randy Johnson(2-0) who went 2 innings allowing no
runs. Johnson got help from Kevin Gregg who earned his 11th save. Matt
Capps(1-1) was tagged with the loss in relief.

Fran Telarico was not very talkative after his team's tough loss. 'I'm not in
the mood for questions, but I'm sure Jamie Imhoff will be glad to talk about
the game as long as you have questions to ask.'

Bay State salvages game three by the slimmest of margins, 5-4. The Black and Tan jumped on "Big Z" early, jumping out to a 5-1 lead after three. In the third, the Apostles threw out two runners at the plate! It could have been much worse. Saint Gabriel mounted a rally in the sixth on two singles sandwiched around a pair of doubles to make it 5-4 Bay State. That's the way it would end, as PH Joe Mauer lined into a DP with runners on first and third in the 9th.

Roy Oswalt tossed a complete game at The Beer Garden as the Bay State Black
and Tan beat the Saint Gabriel Apostles by the count of 5 to 4.

Bay State promptly took the lead in their half of the first scoring 4 runners
on 3 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Todd Helton who thrilled the
crowd when he smashed a two-run homer (his 9th of the season). Saint Gabriel
threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

The winning pitcher was Oswalt(8-6) who allowed 4 runs for the game. Carlos
Zambrano(5-4) was given the loss. He was knocked around by Bay State,
allowing 9 hits and 8 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.

'We lose our concentration for one pitch, and we lose the game.' Jamie Imhoff
said after the game. 'Maybe now these guys will listen when I say they have
to concentrate on EVERY pitch.'

Apostles 5, Black and Tan 3

Another exciting game in the series! Saint Gabriel jumps out to a 3-0 lead after three. Betemit crushes a 1-10 solo HR, followed by Cabrera's 2-run double. Bay State chips away with one in the 4th on a ground out by Redman. Back-to-back 2b-X singles put a runner on third for Frank Thomas, who lifts a SACF to make it 3-2. The Apostles extend the lead to 5-2 in the seventh on two rare errors by SS Vizquel. The Black and Tan make it exciting in the 9th, starting with single, fly out, single, single to chase CC. Gregg gets two fly outs for the save.

Apostles 5, Black and Tan 4

Game One of the series came down to the relief corps. 7 of the 9 runs were scored in the final three innings.

Bay State started the scoring in the bottom of the first. Hudson led off with a walk, followed by a successful H/R play to put him at second. A-Rod doubled him home for a 1-0 Black and Tan lead. The Apostles had ample chance to score in the third, but came up short. Lopez walked and then CS. Quentin was hit by a pitch and then CS. Ichiro singled; stole second. Eck was hit. And, Cantu was hit. Three HBP in one inning! Thome grounded out to A-Rod to end the "threat". Saint Gabriel did knot the game up in the fifth on a double by Suzuki and a single by Eckstein.

It stayed that way until the 7th, when Bay State rapped out three singles for a 2-1 lead. In the top of the 8th, single, double, SAC-F, double gave the Apostles a 3-2 lead. In the bottom, Sizemore hit a bases loaded single to give Bay State the lead only to see the pen allow three straight baserunners and blow the game, 5-4. The dice were rolling high as numerous players were caught stealing, caught advancing and BP SI/HR were missed.

In a dramatic ending the Saint Gabriel Apostles staged a comeback and held on
to win over the Bay State Black and Tan by the count of 5 to 4.

Saint Gabriel scored the decisive runs in a big top of the 9th inning with 2
runs on 3 hits. After an out was recorded, Andre Ethier started the attack
as he banged out a single. Ichiro Suzuki stepped up next and he slapped a
single. David Eckstein then doubled driving home two runs. It was roller
coaster of a game as the lead change hands 5 times.

Kevin Gregg(4-6) allowed 1 run in 2 innings, and picked up the victory. Saul
Rivera(4-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. Jamie Imhoff was very happy
after the game, 'It's great to come back and win it in your last at bats! Our
guys just wouldn't give up. And did you see the fans - one minute they're
laughing and screaming down all sorts of unprintable stuff at our guys - the
next minute - SILENCE! Yes sir, a very enjoyable win this afternoon!'

Apostles 3, Muleriders 1

The Apostles avoid the sweep by taking the final game of the series, 3-1. Early in the game, it looked like the pitchers had their stuff. Numerous splits were missed until the 4th. Cabrera hit a 1-6 DO to lead off the inning, but Jacobs missed a single split with two out. In the bottom of the frame, the Muleriders loaded the bases with one out, but managed only a single run on Millar's FC. The score remained 1-0 ARK until the top of the 8th. With two out, Eckstein doubled, Cabrera walked and Carlos Lee lucked a 1-2 HR over the wall, for a 3-1 Apostle lead. Arkansas went quietly in the final two frames.

After the game, the Saint Gabriel GM announced two trades. Slugger Jim Thome was sent to Rio Brazos for a young SP (Boof Bonser) and cash. Thome is in the last year of his contract and had voiced that he wanted to play for a contender. In the second trade, ILL sent OF Carlos Quentin, LHSP Cliff Lee, CA Chris Ianetta and their first round pick in the rookie draft (rumor was the Apostles were already talking to Evan Longoria) to San Juan for SS Hanley Ramirez, CL Brian Fuentes and RP Pat Neshek. The acquisitions should keep the team from losing 100, but shouldn't keep them out of the lottery.

Muleriders 10, Apostles 9

A thrilling game at Rider Stadium! Jim Thome lead off the scoring with the first of two 2-R HR in the first; 2-0 Apostles. The Apostles had an opportunity to put the game out of reach in the second, with bases loaded, no out. They failed to score any as Joe Mauer was gunned at the plate.

The Muleriders exploded for 5 in the fifth. With two out and one one already in, recently acquired Nyjer Morgan (1e7) dropped an easy fly ball to keep the inning alive. Two walks, a Prince Fielder double and a Cantu error later and the Muleriders were up 5-2.

A passed ball plated one for the Apostles in the 3rd and Thome hit his second HR of the day to knot it at 5 after the fifth. In the 7th, Cantu committed his second 2-out error of the game and Khalil Green made him pay, slamming a 3-R HR. It remained 8-5 ARK until the top of the 9th.

With Lidge on the mound, Cantu singled up the middle. Thome walked to bring the tying run to the plate in the form of Carlos Lee. Lee tied it up with one swing, nailing a 1-15 HR split. Fred Lewis missed a 1-3 HR split to give the Apostles the lead.

It remained tied until the 11th. The Apostles manufactured one run on a single, two stolen bases, and a 1-8 SI split. However, bringing in Gregg to "close" was a big mistake. Posada lead off with a walk, Fielder doubled him to third and Kearns ended the game with a double of his own! Final Score: Muleriders 10, Apostles 9.

55,495 fans watched an exciting game at Rider Stadium. The Arkansas
Muleriders topped the Saint Gabriel Apostles by the slimmest of margins, 10
to 9.

The score was knotted at 8 after nine innings. Arkansas ended up winning it
in the 11th inning. Jorge Posada led off and he drew a walk. Prince Fielder
came to the plate and doubled. Austin Kearns then doubled resulting in a
mighty exciting win for Arkansas and the 55,495 home town fans in attendance.
It was roller coaster of a game as the lead change hands 5 times.

Scott Linebrink(4-1) got the win allowing 1 run in 1 and 1/3 innings. Kevin
Gregg(3-6) was hit with the loss in relief.

Muleriders 12, Apostles 3

The Apostles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Cantu singled in his first AB as an Apostle and scored on a WP. Carlos Lee singled in the other run. In the bottom of the third, Ichiro made an outstanding throw home to nab Miles trying to score on a Pierre double. But, the Muleriders would tack on three runs after that out on a BP single, a single thru Lopez' legs and a single split. That would be all of the scoring until the bottom of the 7th.

Kinsler misses a 1-14 HR and settles for a double. Posada doubles in Ian to chase CC. That's when the floodgates opened, as the Apostles are playing this month short-staffed in the pen. Petit proceeded to give up two HR and 7 runs in his two innings of work.

JUNE comes to a close ...

That was an interesting month! Owners must be getting outside more this month as there were more series turned in on the very last weekend this month than the rest of the month combined! Whew! I'm glad that is over. Hopefully, July will see the results spaced more evenly.

With the close of June, we have played 75 games, or about 46% of the season. We are staying on pace with MLB. We have two teams with 50+ wins (OTT and QUI) while MLB has three (Tampa, Boston and Chicago-N). However, they've played 7-10 more games than we have.

Bloomington (BSK) continues to lead the BR-A with 37 wins and a sub-500 record. BSK is last in the Babe Ruth in hitting and 4th in pitching. Eric Byrnes is its lone newspaper headliner, ranking 3rd with 28 steals. ARK is four games back. The other two teams, ALT and EAT, are on 100-loss paces.

Fairfax (FFF) has stretched its lead in the BR-W to 8G. FFF is 7th in hitting and 1st in pitching in the Babe Ruth. FFF has a trio of 9G winners (Cain, Webb and Hamels), the saves leader (Soria), and strikeouts leader (Webb). Webb is also second in ERA with 3.05. Soria and Cain are 1-2 in Cy Young voting as well. FFF is one of three BR teams on a 100+ win pace. RBC is a distant second.

Quincy (QUI) has pulled away in the BR-M. After a 22-2 month, QUI went from 2G back to 5G up! They lead the BR in hitting and are 6th in pitching. QUI has "Big Papi" as a potential triple crown winner (2nd AVE, 1st HR, 1st RBI), along with another hitter in the top five of each of those categories. Papelbon is second in saves, Wang 5th in ERA and Reyes is leading in SB. QUI touts the BR's best record (52-23). BAY is sitting in second place.

Bay State (BAY) has a comfortable lead, 6G, in the wild card race. But, they have to be shaking their collective heads after going 15-9 in the month and falling 7G in the standings! BAY is 3rd in hitting and 2nd in pitching in the BR. BAY is the third BR team on a 100+ win pace and is lead by A-Rod (28 HR, 71 RBI), second behind Ortiz in the MVP voting. BAY also has Abreu 3rd in BA, Cordero 3rd in saves and Hernandez 3rd in ERA and Cy Young voting.

Ottawa (OTT) holds a commanding 19G lead in the CY-K. On pace to shatter the DBA record for wins, its no suprise OTT leads the DBA in hitting and pitching. Jones and Crawford sit 1-2 in BA and 3-2 in MVP voting, Maddux and Kazmir sit 1-2 in Wins, Putz is tied for the saves lead, Beckett is 2nd in ERA, Crawford and Jeter are 2-5 in steals and Kazmir and Beckett are 1-2 in K's. OTT also has the top three Cy Young candidates, Putz, Maddux and Kazmir. WHW moved past ELR for second.

Lebanon (LEB) shot into first place in the CY-G by going 16-8 in June. LEB is 8th in hitting and 3rd in pitching. Nathan is 3rd in saves, Bannister 5th in ERA and Shields 4th in strikeouts. CDC falls to second, just 3G over 500.

Jacksonville (JSC) leads the CY-J by 13G. JSC is 5th in hitting and pitching. They are led by leading MVP candidate, Carlos Pena (27 HR, 65 RBI). Dice-K and Zito are 4-5 in wins and Saito leads the CY in saves. BDD holds onto second.

Carbondale (CDC) leads the CY Wild Card by 2G over WHW. CDC is 2nd in hitting and 6th in pitching. Young, 3rd in BA, is CDC's lone newspaper rep. WHW is riding the arm of Jeremy Guthrie (3rd in wins, 4th in ERA) to make the CY Wild Card a race.
